The situation
A software consultancy in Columbus, Ohio needed to staff its delivery teams with developers, testers, and product owners who could hold the bar its own clients expect. The test for AI staff augmentation is harder when the buyer is itself a consultancy: every augmented engineer works on someone else's client, carrying the consultancy's reputation with them.
That ruled out the usual vendor arrangement. The consultancy needed people who integrate into existing teams and work the way its own staff do, not an external team passing deliverables over a wall.
What we built
An embedded nearshore development team
Leanware embedded twelve team members across the consultancy's software development teams, covering development, testing, and product ownership. The dedicated team worked nearshore from Colombia, inside the consultancy's existing delivery structure rather than as a separate workstream.
AI-augmented delivery with Cursor and Copilot
The embedded engineers worked with Cursor and GitHub Copilot as part of their daily development workflow, an AI staff augmentation setup in practice, not just in name.
Leanware management stayed close to the engagement: monitoring its people, mentoring them for growth, and resolving any issue the client raised quickly rather than letting it sit.
Outcome
-
12 embedded team members delivering feature content on time across multiple delivery teams
Source ↗
The embedded team members delivered feature content within the expected timeframes and produced a quality product. The client's Clutch review scores the engagement 5.0 across every category and credits the strong work ethic and communication of the individual team members. It also notes that Leanware builds teams aligned with values of integrity and quality, not just technical capability, which is what a consultancy staking its own client relationships on augmented staff actually buys.
The engagement began in November 2023 and is ongoing. Per the confidentiality terms, the client is identified only as a software consultancy and the engagement value is confidential.
"Leanware team members have a strong work ethic, and they communicate well."

Engagement FAQ
What is AI staff augmentation?
Staff augmentation where the embedded engineers work with AI coding tools as part of their normal workflow, rather than AI being a separate service. In this engagement, the twelve Leanware team members used Cursor and GitHub Copilot daily while working inside the client's own delivery teams.
How does a nearshore development team integrate with existing delivery teams?
The team members join the client's teams directly instead of operating as an external vendor. In this case, twelve people were embedded across the consultancy's software development teams, with Leanware management monitoring the engagement, mentoring its people, and resolving issues quickly.
What roles can nearshore staff augmentation services cover besides developers?
More than coding capacity. This engagement covered three roles across the client's teams: software developers, testers, and product owners.
How is quality managed when augmented engineers work on your clients' projects?
Leanware management stays close to the engagement, monitoring and mentoring its people rather than placing them and stepping away. The client, itself a software consultancy answerable to its own customers, scored the engagement 5.0 in every Clutch review category.
How long does this kind of engagement run?
This one started in November 2023 and is still running. Staff augmentation engagements are open-ended by design, continuing as long as the delivery teams need the capacity.
